Columbus, Ohio, 9/19/2007 - Anyone who regularly spends time in downtown Columbus probably has passed by the intersection of Town and Front Streets — and probably has noticed that big changes have been afoot at the former Lazarus department store. Window openings, long since filled in, have been reopened. The brick and terra cotta facade has been restored. Lazarus is looking like its old self again — and it's now getting new life as a mixed-use space for offices, retail, artists' studios, exhibitions, and restaurants. The Lazarus building will continue to be part of Columbus' urban fabric for generations to come. Best of all, this renovation project is LEED Gold Certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. In fact, the Lazarus project is the first renovation project in Central Ohio to achieve the LEED CS Certified Gold rating.
A LEED Gold certification means that the Lazarus renovation project achieved a high level of environmental sustainability in site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. Schooley Caldwell Associates and Elkus Manfredi Architects developed the design concept for Lazarus, and in doing so made a commitment to going green. More than 11,000 tons of concrete, steel, wood, glass, and other materials were recycled rather than going to a landfill. The landmark Lazarus water tower now serves as an important part of the rainwater collection system. A "living" roof reduces summer heat buildup and slows water runoff. Low-flow plumbing fixtures, waterless urinals, and energy-efficient systems all reduce utility costs. Nontoxic paint, carpet, adhesives, and sealants help to improve indoor air quality.
Schooley Caldwell Associates proudly continues its six-decades-long commitment to Columbus and to responsible, sustainable design. The firm has been at the forefront of energy conservation practices and “green” building technologies for many years and has architects, engineers and landscape architects who are LEED Accredited Professionals, in addition to the firm's membership with the United States Green Building Council and status as an Energy Star Partner.
