SCA President, Bob Loversidge, to Speak at Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference

Columbus, Ohio, 9/12/2006 - Bob Loversidge, FAIA, Schooley Caldwell’s president and CEO, will speak at October’s Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference in Washington, D.C. He will participate in an all day symposium about additions to historic structures. In addition, during the conference, he will give a presentation about the design of sympathetic additions to monumental buildings, using the firm’s four state capitol restoration projects as case studies. “Preservationists often shy away from additions, but, as participants in the session will learn, there are several effective and respectful ways to add on to monumental historic buildings,” Bob said. Using the capitols of Ohio, Kansas, Utah and Minnesota as case studies, the program will explore alternative methods of adding usable space and systems to large public buildings. Participants will: • Learn to identify three to five methods of adding space to monumental historic buildings. • Learn that contemporary systems can be sensitively integrated into historic buildings. • Discuss the aesthetics of addition design. • Learn the need for consensus-building and public participation before executing change to major public landmarks. The session will include time for discussion, so participants have been encouraged to bring photos of buildings they are interested in discussing.
